Why Do We Forget New Words So Quickly?

Recognizing a word on a flashcard is easier than producing it in a conversation. A word can feel familiar while still being difficult to recall without a hint.

The useful part

Retrieval practice means trying to remember before revealing the answer. Spacing those attempts over time can improve retention. There is no single forgetting percentage or perfect review schedule for every learner.

Try this

Learn a few words in sentences. Try recalling them tomorrow, then several days later. Bring difficult words back sooner instead of repeatedly rereading the whole list.
